I grew up in El Monte, and my father was a Founding Credit Union member, having been on the El Monte City Council when they decided to authorize its establishment. My family has a long history of membership. I joined the Credit Union when I left a position as a Legal Assistant at a law firm in Long Beach and went to work with my father in his land use consulting business. That would have been sometime between 1979 and 1980. I have not yet retired from my consulting business, but plan to do so soon.
Why Be On The Board?
It didn't occur to me to consider being a member of the Credit Union Board until Becky Aguirre, El Monte Community Credit Union's Board of Director, called to extend an invitation to join the board after the resignation of Jim Mussenden. I enjoyed the years I worked with Becky and a short list of others who were part of the Supervisory Committee over the years I served. The Supervisory Committee had great responsibility, and we had to deal with challenging issues occasionally. Working as a team with prior CEO of the Credit Union, the Supervisory Committee resolved the issues, even removing a member from the Board of the Credit Union and requiring that Board Member and their family close their Credit Union accounts.
Protecting the integrity of the Credit Union and faith in the Credit Union held by the members is critically important. I would be proud to help be responsible for maintaining that faith and helping to grow the Credit Union in ways that keep it viable for all the members and the community.
I also have a strong belief in the value of volunteering. I was the Community Emergency Coordinator and Program Manager for the Altadena Sheriff’s Station and the City of Pasadena for 12 years. I am on the Board of The Mineralogical Society of Southern California, Inc., and have served as Chair and Producer of Mineral Shows, as Program Chair, Field Trip Chair, and more recently, as Treasurer for 4 years, Speaker Chair for 4 years, and as a Director. In earlier years, I helped organize and run the March of Dimes Walk in Huntington Beach for 2 years.
Ultimately, it is an honor to be associated with El Monte Community Credit Union, and to have a role in support of our members, our amazing staff and our CEO Sandra Rosas, and the Board.
